Expert Interview: Godox Film and Television Lighting in TVC commercials

In today's guide, we’re excited to record the interview of Mr. Huang Jun, a well-known commercial lighting engineer based in China, who has been working with Godox film studio lights for several years.

If you’re looking for new applications to create TVC commercials or simply want to explore new ideas when experiencing all the latest LED film and video lights from Godox, this guide is right for you.

Lighting Engineer: Huang Jun

Since 2004, Mr Huang Jun has had rich practical experience working on TVC commercials. With a huge amount of experience in controlling light and shadow, as well as being good at using colour and lenses to create distinctive picture styles, he created many masterpieces:  TMall - "Goodbye City. See You on Snow!, MEITUAN|She is blooming short film.

What considerations does he make when choosing the Godox lighting fixtures?

Mr. Huang Jun said, "I'm always looking for the best lighting technology for my projects. These things are particularly important to me. Firstly, I can adjust the setting of lights quickly and easily via remote control and wireless signal. This allows me to change the mood at short notice or during the shoot by changing the colour temperature or brightness, for example. Secondly, the lights are portable and robust, empowering me to smooth my production process. Beyond the light quality, I also prioritise the light that comes with waterproof ability when it starts to rain during an outdoor shoot". No doubt to surprise, Godox offers all these things in one.

Which Godox lights were utilised, and how were they employed during the filming?

He has utilised RGB studio space lights, the MG1200Bi video light, the MG2400Bi LED film light, and other items. Godox lights are lightweight, rainproof, brilliant, have a wide colour temperature, and are also robust.

It also has many accessories. If you want better light quality, you can use Para umbrellas of various sizes. The effect it presents is very suitable for taking beauty photos. If you don’t want the light area to be too scattered, you can use a snoot or a reflective plate. In the past, I had to think about how to create light and shadow before working, but now I can flexibly control it by choosing different types and sizes of reflective plates.

What benefits do the Godox MG1200Bi and MG2400Bi offer in comparison to traditional lights?

Well, the Godox MG1200Bi Film Light boasts a brightness almost equivalent to 2.5 HMI lamps, while the MG2400Bi shines close to 4K. Both of these lights are lighter than the HMI lamps and can be used immediately without preheating or adding colour chips to change the colour temperature.

During filming endeavours in Shanghai, numerous directors hoped to utilise scenes featuring old houses within the city to enhance the film's quality and viewing experience. However, these places normally have more restrictions on lighting. For example, when lighting from the window, using HMI lamps requires a large light and might be a generator car. Instead, using Godox film lights can allow him to use a wall plug to support the light outside the window. Thanks to this, he can achieve effects that took a lot of time and effort to achieve previously.

How to use and what is his first impression of the Godox LiteFlow reflectors?

The Godox LiteFlow reflector system offers a range of models and sizes, providing flexibility in the creation process of various works. Firstly, in scenarios without a fixed lamp position, the lamp can be hung at the desired location. By placing a mirror where the lamp is to be hung and using reflections from different angles, the desired lamp position can be achieved.

Secondly, when aiming to reduce the light area, 1-2 small mirrors can be employed to adjust the hardness and softness of the light. This allows him to control the desired light area, light ratio, and light quality.

Thirdly, when shooting outdoors on a sunny day, whether the actor is standing in the shadow, 100cm and 50cm mirrors can be utilised. This helps achieve hard light on the actor or improve the actor's lighting. The quality of light reflected by natural light surpasses that of 18K headlights, resulting in brighter output, superior light quality, and a more desirable overall effect.

What do you think of the light efficiency of the Godox Parabolic umbrella softbox?

The Para umbrella light diffusers offer a subtle and nuanced light quality, blending both hard and soft effects, contrasting sharply with the light quality produced by foam boards. This versatile umbrella meets diverse needs on its own and finds extensive applications, especially in settings like white studios. It stands out as his preferred choice for capturing a variety of shots, including cosmetics, skincare products, fashion and portraits.
